Fashion photographer Marco Ovando's first photography book, The Dolls, features the icons of the hit award-winning program RuPaul's Drag Race. Ovando has worked extensively with many of the queens on the wildly popular international Werq the World tour and, during Covid-19, the Drive 'N Drag tour, where the talent is referred to as "the queens" by staff and crew, but the girls themselves use a different moniker: "the dolls."
In a fashion photography career spanning more than 25 years, Ovando has been at the forefront of capturing the glamour of the drag world since the very first season of RuPaul's Drag Race. The Dolls is a collaboration with Brandon Voss of Voss Events, producer of Werq the World and Drive 'N Drag, offering a glimpse into this fascinating world of drag and performance through Ovando's lens.
Split into four sections, The Dolls opens with studio and on-set portraits of the top drag queens Ovando has photographed for years, including winners and fan favorites Aquaria (Season 10), Yvie Oddly (Season 11), Jaida Essence Hall (Season 12) and Violet Chachki (Season 7), who also graces the cover. "The Shows" and "The BTS" share exclusive photos from the tours and the Las Vegas residency RuPaul's Drag Race Live!, and "The Parties" captures the dolls in their element as guests at premier events like the Met Gala and as the featured entertainment at parties around the world.
